witholding distressing truths may render change impossible
2006-7-18
Dick Richards has a short post about what makes - or hinders change.
He summarieses that there need to be three factors involved:
- distress
- an appaling vision
- the capacity for change
And he continues to point out that the - only too human - notion to shield our loved ones from distressing truths is a sure way to render any change unlikely. It takes the momentum away. The reason to change. In German there is a word "Handlungsbedarf". The felt need for change. Shielding from distress will remove that felt need. Everything is ok, so why change?
Thanks Dick, that was one thought I needed to be reminded of.
