Jon Udell and Graphs
(Tuesday 30th April 2002)

Well yes, contacting Jon Udell in comment on his last BYTE article was a very good idea. Not only were his comments about my experiment with the Google related search very inspiring, I also found a lot of new info relevant for me. (some of which are not new per se, but new to me)

Jon's article about Measuring Web Mindshare for one is a must read for anybody playing with relations of websites.

But also this interactive Map of Internet Industry Partnerships is definetly worth a look. Those relationships are handbuilt, which might in fact make them even more meaningfull and valid.

All in all I might quote Jon in this: "Basically, I think the evaluation function that computes the relations is the key to the whole thing, and of course that's outside your control."
So I guess the synergetic approach of combining several sources into one meaningfull 'Graph' might actually be the way to go. And to be honest, I never was very happy about the idea of baseing a ot of work onto the availeability of one service...
