In his early 20's, Berg was in a car accident that made him a quadriplegic. Told he would never work again, he ended up with a career inspiring hundreds of thousands of people as a motivational speaker.
Welllllll... in a way I can really relate to that. People who get to know me and experience my visual handicap tend to be really suprised once they see my artwork. Given that it was created some years back, they mostly adapt quickly. But once I tell them that I'm into RC planes again they go "WHAT? You are almost blind Martin, how can you fly little model aeroplanes???"
It's a case of knowing my boundaries, knowing my limits. I can gauge very well if/when/how I can control such a plane, and if I can not. Also I know very well why I fly really small and therefore lightweight flyers these days. They tend to break less easily and hurt less if they hit someone! It's also very much a matter of knowlegde... Just because I'm visually imaired doesn't mean I can design and build a killer flyer! I have a better understanding of aerodynamics and flight trimming than most hobbyist I came into contact with. Not being able to see that well does in no way hinder me to explore the dynamics of flight to the furthest reaches. And not being able to fly that well has opened my resources to go far farther into that direction than many ever go.
So there's actually very little surprise about my ability to build and fly very good planes. I simply push my boundaries and use the skills and abilities I do have to the fullest. That's something many don't do...
