Peter V. comments on Metacrap
(Sunday 22nd December 2002)

... another good one that isn't understood by many people starting out in the metadata world is that schemas aren't neutral.

Hey, but that's exactly what I'd want from tagging my own content with meta-data. It kind of answers the 'what's in for the author' thing.
I'm not sure if I can get my point across here. But as an author, my goal in tagging my contrent would be exactly the not neutral part. Say I'm writing a novel that contains several storylines, each told from the view of a different charakter. Each of them has a very specific world-view. Now one use of tagging this prose with meta-data would be for me as author to mark up these conflicting pieces of opinion in the prose. One later use could be to 'filter' a longer text for the specific charakteristics of one charakter...

So meta-data in this special case would intentionally be not-neutral...

But then maybe I'm missing some point about schemas here...

And as to the original Schemas aren't neutral point... Well, yes they arn't. And any topology that permits only-one category for each item is absolutely flawed in my eyes. One of the powers of this kind of categorisation would be (for me at least) the fact that one given 'item' can and should belong to several 'topics'.

I think this 'neutral-schema' idea is a common misconception. And one of the main point I tried to get rid of in the desing of Traumtank. The misconception that each thing has its one and only one place in the world.

But sorry, my world doesn't work that way. My cat can be a 'pet' AND a 'feline' and also a nuisiance, all at the same time.

As to the closing words in MetacrapReliable metadata... I'd like to add: I do agree that there might not be a common grounds kind of meta-data to markup everybodys content. But the hand-crafted kind of meta-data is still very usefull and important for the person (or group of persons) crafting the content and the meta-data. I think the real benefit of this kind of meta-info tagging isn't one for a wide audience, but one for a specific audience, maybe only consisting of the author alone.
