Just some research I'm doing...
Given task: simulate a client with a slow dial-up connection, when the client machine sits directly next to the server on a network... Some kind of throttling is called for...

IP_DUMMYNET
dummynet is a flexible tool originally designed for for testing networking protocols, and since then (mis)used for bandwidth management.
This is the one. The following setup: a inexpensive intel-box with two ethernet-cards, a simple one-floppy FreeBSD distro and we've got all we need!
