Steve Himmer of OnePotMeal has a nice analogue of why counting links counts for nothing
(Sunday 9th February 2003)

Think of this: How many people watch each Bruce Willis movie, compared to how many have actually read the writings of Freud? Which has had a bigger influence on the way we understand our world? I'm going with Freud, though in this, like all else, I'm willing to be proven wrong. It's not about the numbers who read Freud, but rather the ways in which his particular understanding of the world is filtered from his own work through the work of others and, ultimately, becomes deeply intertwined with all of our lives in ways we aren't even aware of.
