what to talk about
(Tuesday 4th May 2004)

Ah, I know what I could add to a discussion about The role of personal Webpublishing for self-organized and informal learning... I'd love to talk about how keyword search is a very poor tool in information exploration (Finding Out About)... How I'd rather like to see 'associative context'... the like of which I tried to realize with my similar-entries experiment that is currently on-hold for technical reasons (VectorSpace, the one tech that gave real good results completly kills the server on indexing...)

Okay, you might ask... but what does that have to do with weblogs? Or, why is this a topic esp. suited for weblogs?
well... I think the weblog format is ideal for collecting small knowledge snippets... we regularly post quotes and exerpts on our blogs... sometimes for later reference... but often also only partially understood in the moment of posting. And that's where this assosiation magic comes in. Even without internal tools like an LSI searchengine etc. such posts magically attract similar data. Take Google referers for example. A blog entry about any given subject is bound to attract at least some search results on Google or another SE. Calling up those very search results and following the pointers might in many cases lead you to pages discussing the topic you wouldn't have found in a direct search. Why? You might not have used the exact search terms... So a topic based blog-post can be used as Google bait... people will most likly use other keywords as you would to arrive at the page, and then reversing their steps can lead you into new realms. Esp. if you consider the fact that during the learning phase you most likely not know the magic words that define a topic so that it can be found on a SE...
